EarthWay Spreader Settings: Dial, Trays & the Two-Pass Method
EarthWay EV-N-SPRED spreaders (2150, 2600A-Plus, and siblings) are the step up from big-box units — and their settings system has two features no other homeowner brand has: a wide 0–30 dial and three interchangeable output trays that completely change what every dial number delivers. Miss the tray detail and every chart on the internet will steer you wrong. This page covers the dial, the trays, EarthWay's two-pass convention, and a tray-aware dial finder.
⚠️ Before using any EarthWay setting — check your tray color. Look under the hopper: red = Standard output (pre-installed on all models), black = Low output, blue = High output. Each tray needs very different dial numbers for the same rate; wrong-tray settings are the #1 cause of major over- or under-application on EarthWay spreaders.

EarthWay Dial Finder (Tray-Aware)
Enter the bag rate, pick your installed tray and pass method — get a starting dial number with the two-pass math handled.
EarthWay settings chart (Standard red tray)
Starting dial numbers by rate for EV-N-SPRED broadcast models with the pre-installed Standard tray, following EarthWay's Setting & Rate Guide conventions. For the black or blue tray, use the finder — the numbers shift substantially.
| Rate (lbs/1,000 sq ft) | Typical products | Dial — single pass | Dial — two passes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Light fertilizers, pre-emergents | 9 | — |
| 3 | Standard synthetic fertilizers | 11 | — |
| 4 | Fertilizer + pre-emergent combos | 13 | 9 (×2) |
| 5 | Heavier synthetic rates | 15 | 10 (×2) |
| 8 | Starter fertilizers, light organics | 21 | 13 (×2) |
| 12.8 | Milorganite Classic and similar organics | — | 18 (×2) |

EarthWay's calibration method (shut-off test)
EarthWay's own procedure: get the bag rate per 1,000 sq ft; weigh out enough for a 200–400 sq ft plot, keeping at least ⅓ of a hopper in the unit so flow stays consistent; set the chart dial; walk the plot at ~3 mph; weigh what's left and compare. The hub's calibration check calculator does the arithmetic and tells you which way to move the dial.
FAQ
What do EarthWay spreader dial numbers mean?
The EV-N-SPRED dial runs 0 (closed) to 30 (fully open) and controls the hopper gate opening — higher numbers, larger opening, more flow. The number is specific to EarthWay's scale and to the installed Flex-Select tray; it doesn't correspond to any other brand's numbers or to a rate.
Why do my EarthWay settings seem way off from the chart?
Check the tray color under the hopper: red = Standard (pre-installed), black = Low output, blue = High output. Each needs very different dial numbers for the same rate — see the tray section.
What is the EarthWay two-pass method?
Half the target rate on the dial, two perpendicular passes. Recommended above ~5 lbs/1,000. Chart entries marked "2 pass" already show the half-rate dial — details above.
What settings does the EarthWay 2150 use?
The 2150 (50 lb commercial model) uses the standard 0–30 dial and Flex-Select trays, so all the logic on this page applies directly: dial from rate for the installed tray, two passes above ~5 lbs/1,000, calibrate with the shut-off method.
How do I calibrate an EarthWay spreader?
Bag rate per 1,000 → weighed test amount for 200–400 sq ft (keep ⅓ hopper minimum) → chart dial → walk at ~3 mph → weigh the remainder and compare. The calibration calculator does the math.
Important note
Settings on this page follow EarthWay's Setting & Rate Guide, whose own disclaimer applies: variations in material characteristics, walking speed, and ground surface may require different settings, and EarthWay makes no warranty of coverage uniformity from listed settings. Product labels supersede any chart; calibrate before treating the whole lawn.
