2,4-D Mixing Calculator: Dose the Area, Not the Gallon

2,4-D is the herbicide people mix wrong most often, because they ask the glyphosate question — "how much per gallon?" — of a product that's dosed per area. A selective lawn herbicide only stays selective inside a rate window: the right ounces spread over the right square footage kills dandelions and spares grass, while the same ounces concentrated on half the area injures the lawn you were protecting. Why 2,4-D math starts with area

Glyphosate kills everything, so concentration is the only number that matters. A selective herbicide is different: the lawn survives because grasses metabolize 2,4-D faster than broadleaves die from it — at label rates. The label rate is therefore an amount of active ingredient per square foot of living turf, and water is just the delivery vehicle. Whether you carry your 5,000 sq ft's worth of 2,4-D in 5 gallons or 15 changes droplet coverage, not dose.

The practical consequence: your walking pace and sprayer output determine your real rate. If your sprayer puts out 2 gallons per 1,000 sq ft at your pace, the tank must be mixed so that 2 gallons contains exactly 1,000 sq ft's worth of product. Don't know your output? Amine vs ester: check the fine print on the jug

"2,4-D" on the front label covers two formulations with different behavior. Amine salts (the common consumer jugs — Southern Ag, Hi-Yield, and most "Amine 400"-style products) are water-soluble, low-volatility, and the right default for home lawns; they want temperatures above ~60°F to work well. Esters penetrate waxy weed cuticles better and keep working in cool spring and fall weather — but they volatilize in heat, and 2,4-D ester vapor can lift off a lawn hours after application and land on tomatoes, grapes, and ornamentals downwind. Ester injury to a neighbor's garden is one of the most common herbicide-drift complaints filed with state ag departments. Unless you have a specific cool-season reason and open surroundings, buy amine.

Grass tolerance: selectivity has a species list

Established bluegrass, tall fescue, ryegrass, zoysia, and bermuda handle label rates. St. Augustine and centipede are the exceptions — many labels cut rates sharply or exclude them entirely — and new lawns need to wait until after the second or third mowing. The label's turf table is a two-column read that prevents replacing a lawn; check it before the first tank.

Spray conditions that make or break 2,4-D

2,4-D rewards timing more than most products: young, actively growing weeds at 60–85°F, calm wind, and the label's rainfast window (commonly 6–24 hours) clear of rain. Skip drought-stressed lawns — stressed grass loses its metabolic edge over the weeds. And don't mow within 2–3 days either side of spraying: the weed needs leaf area to absorb the dose, and fresh cuts on grass blades increase uptake where you don't want it. Spraying a large area? A shot of marking dye in the tank makes overlaps and skips visible in real time — with an area-dosed product, that's rate control, not cosmetics.
