Remedy Ultra (61% triclopyr ester) is the pasture and brush standard, and it's really three products in one label: a water-based foliar spray, an oil-based basal bark treatment, and a broadcast pasture herbicide — each with different math, different carriers, and different seasons. Mixing the right rate with the wrong carrier is the classic Remedy mistake: a 25% mix in water instead of oil wastes sixty dollars of herbicide on bark it can't penetrate. Pick your method below.

Choosing the method: it's a calendar question

Foliar spray — full leaf, growing season

Individual-plant treatment at 0.5–2% in water works when brush is in full leaf and actively growing — typically late spring through early fall. Wet the canopy to the point of drip, not past it. Waxy-leaved species shed water-only spray, so the label directs adding surfactant; for tough brush, methylated seed oil is the step up — MSO surfactant↗ is built for exactly this.

Basal bark — the leaf-off method

The 25%-in-oil mix applied to the lower 12–18″ of stems (under ~6″ diameter, full circumference) works when foliar can't: winter dormancy, sensitive crops nearby, or stems hiding inside grass you want to keep. The oil carrier is the mechanism — it moves triclopyr through bark into the cambium. Basal oil is formulated for it; diesel works per many labels but smells like it. This is precision work best done with a small pump sprayer and a low-flow adjustable nozzle↗ — you're painting stems, not spraying foliage.

Broadcast — pasture scale

Boom or boomless at 1–4 pints per acre by species, commonly in 10–20 GPA of water. Rate selection is species-driven — mesquite, huisache, blackberry, and locust each get their own line in the label's tables, and several want specific timing windows (mesquite famously 40–90 days after bud break). Grazing: most beef uses carry no restriction, but lactating dairy and hay cutting have intervals that depend on rate — the grazing table is a must-read, not fine print. What Remedy is — and when it's the wrong bottle

Triclopyr is selective for broadleaves and woody plants: it clears brush while grasses keep standing, which is the entire economics of pasture spraying — kill the mesquite, keep the forage. That selectivity also defines its limits. It won't touch grassy weeds, and if the goal is bare ground rather than saved grass, you want glyphosate or RM43's residual mix instead. One more ester caution: like 2,4-D esters, triclopyr ester volatilizes in high heat — avoid spraying foliar mixes into hot, still afternoons near gardens, vineyards, or susceptible ornamentals.
